The Cardow Rum Room’s Official Debut – an Enthralling Multi-Sensory Rum Experience in the Heart of Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas USVI – November 13, 2023

This past Saturday, local historians, hotel, and tourism industry actors as well as tour operators assembled in Cardow Jeweler’s back store space—in what was once a bustling warehouse that traded in sugar, rum, tobacco, and coal in the late 1800’s— to what has now become the newly opened Cardow Rum Room.

The cocktail party consisted of rum and food pairings, fresh sugarcane and coconuts, keynote speakers and a bespoke cocktail making class by renowned local master mixologist, Kim Holland. Senator Carla Joseph commented “Cardow’s new rum room adds an ingenious new flavor to the on-island experience in St. Thomas. The ambiance of the Cardow Rum Room is relaxing and soothing, while you learn about the history and evolution of rum.”

Cardow’s new generation, Paul and Carolina de Lyrot, recently completed the transformation of part of the building into an ultra-private tasting bar, museum and multi-sensory experience celebrating sugarcane spirits, including the Cardow curated award winning Extra Virgin Rums.

The Cardow building is a historic landmark built in stones dating back to the Danes’ arrival in 1672. The location was previously used as a waterfront warehouse. As Nadine Marchena Kean recounted, “this [is a] new space, that’s really a really, old space.” Nadine Marchena Kean went on to describe, “This space was built as you see it on the earliest stamps of buildings within Charlotte Amalie, … This is our opportunity when coming to this location to really talk about the warehouses and why they were established. These were not stores.”

Carolina de Lyrot believes the Cardow Rum Room is one of the new developments in the wave of transforming Main Street back into a functioning and interesting tourism destination and local town center. “We hope to not only offer a new on-island experience, but also a local gathering spot for fun cultural events like mauby, coquito classes and historical sessions.”

Now open for bookings, Cardow Rum Room can tailor tour packages with the island’s favorite and oldest family-run jeweler, Cardow, and now barrel-aged rum brand producer, Extra Virgin Rum by Cardow. Guests will be invited to sample sensational rums with their defining French touch complementing the heritage of the Cardow brand. Pair a historical tour and tasting with an immersive mixology class following grimoire recipes and rhymes to concoct a signature rum-infused blend.

Cardow Rum Room is available for tours or event space – think experiential museum for travelers or the perfect private space for a holiday party. Whether you are a rum connoisseur or curious to savor the nuances of the Extra Virgin rums, this is a must in Saint Thomas.
